Diversity Visa (DV) Green Card Lottery

The Diversity Visa Lottery, also known as the Green Card Lottery, runs approximately for one month each year. Entries for this lottery are only accepted by regular mail and can be entered by foreign nationals from anywhere in the world.

Yearly,  each county’s rate of immigration to the United States  is determined by the Attorney General and the countries with a high rate of immigration are excluded from the lottery. There is no fee to enter the diversity lottery and information on the lottery is published in September. The winners of the lottery are eligible to apply for green cards providing that they meet the requirements for a green card. Winning the lottery does not mean that you will get a green card in the mail.

Requirements

To obtain a visa from the lottery process, the law requires that the applicant must have at least a high school education or its equivalent or, within the last 5 years, have two years of work experience in an occupation requiring at least two years’ training or experience.

Winner Notification

Diversity Visa Lottery applicants selected will be notified by mail between the months of May and July of the next year. Applicants selected will be  provided further instructions, including information on fees associated with immigrating to the United States.
